"Change Your Body About Your Mind" -Thomas Myers |

"If you can imagine how it feels to have a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness, chronic stress, at ease with itself and the earth's gravitational field, then you will understand the goals of Rolfing Structural Integration." - Dr. Ida Pauline Rolf PhD. |
Rolfing, Structural Integration and Kinesis Myofascial Integration Structural Integration, also known as RolfingŪ, Rolf Method, KMI, Zen Therapy, Soma Therapy, Hellerwork and others, is a series of hands-on bodywork sessions developed and inspired by Dr. Ida P Rolf as a method for balancing and re-aligning the whole body. She referred to this 10-12 session series as 'the recipe'. This recipe uses the unique ingredients present in each of us to help re-establish our natural alignment- enhancing our posture, relieving us from pain and giving us greater freedom to move. The human body is a complex, self-correcting system of trillions of cells living together in one continuous, coordinated whole. Without the connective tissue, or fascia, acting as the glue that binds it all into a cohesive and integrated organism, we would slump into a puddle. The web-like facial net, also known as the "living matrix", invests all parts of our bodies including muscles and tendons, bones, internal organs and blood vessels. Picture a "muscle" and note that 40-60% of the "muscle" is muscle cells the rest is connective tissue in it's various forms. Fascia isn't a trivial system. It is an energetic and tensional matrix that responds instantly to even the most subtle change in our structure. Even the nerves, blood vessels, organs and bones are wrapped in bags of fascial membrane, giving them tensile strength and protection. |

Whether awake or asleep, we are constantly challenged by the force of gravity pulling us toward the Earth. The fascial matrix, our organ of support, responds to this stress by reinforcing our posture, shortening in some places and lengthening in others. Over time the sticky, shrink-wrap nature of fascia fixes these patterns into our system creating our unique structural form. These compensatory patterns are present in all of us and are magnified by our occupations, habits, traumas, injuries, development and genetics. "The Kinesis Myofascial Integration (KMI) 'brand' of structural integration concentrates on doing deep, lasting, and significant bodywork, with anatomical precision, blended with movement education and sensitivity to the unfolding individual experience." -Thomas Myers KMI Director ( click here for more on KMI) Because the body is better balanced after SI, it expends less of its vital energies against gravity. This biological energy efficiency is often experienced as a higher level of alertness and vitality. Movement becomes easier and less painful and overall functioning tends to improve. |
